Instructions for Groups
SUMMARY
In order to provide the fellows and scholars with a better
preparation for their return to Vietnam upon their graduation in the US, Dr. Vo
Van Toi has initiated the idea of organizing “All the Ways Home” program. It is
hoped to give the fellows and scholars the opportunities to work together in teams
and network, to discuss their future return, to share ideas and vision, and
probably to convey their ideas to those interested in Vietnam. Fellows and
scholars are grouped into six teams to work together for months to answer a
series of suggested questions before finalizing and presenting it to the whole
VEF cohort and expert panel at the conference. Teams are encouraged to use the
questions as a reference only and think (and work) beyond the questions and
requirements. All fellows and scholars are expected to participate actively in
this exciting effort. Teams are expected to deliver excellent and professional presentations
and reports. Details on goals, groups, suggested questions and schedule can be
found in the following sections.
GOALS
To help fellows to (1) be proactive and positive, (2) develop their
vision, sense of organization, planning and iterative process, (3) sharpen
their critical thinking, (4) work effectively in teams, (4) find ways to reach
consensus and how to convey their ideas tersely, and (5) better prepare
themselves for their future return to Vietnam.
GROUPS
The six groups are described as follows. The lists of groups’

PREPARATION
BEFORE CONFERENCE
By 10/28/2007
- Select 02 leaders for each
group of fellows and scholars. Members send their nominations to program
coordinators (Tiendung Le and Thanh Do).
- Any individual suggestion
for change of group should be directed to the program coordinators.
From 10/29 to
12/16/2007
Fellows and scholars will work within their teams by distance
with coordination of the group leaders. It is up to teams’ choice to organize
their teams and method of working. A mailing list was generated for each group
for their use, as in group descriptions. It should be noted that, given the
amount and quality of work required, teams need to actually work in their teams
during this period. The time allocated during conference is for refining
purposes only.
Suggested
working questions
- Briefly describe future
expertise, activities that you plan
- How good are you, what can
you bring back to VN as a group, in which fields (in research, education
or entrepreneurship)?
- How do you think you fit
with the current system, why, can you make any compromise if you are not
perfectly fit in?
- What are the ideal working
conditions for you? (salary, ranking in the system, research facility,
research freedom, vision of the high level supervisors ….)
- What are the ideal
infrastructure and operation system in VN for you to excel? (compare them
with the existing one)
- How do you build this
infrastructure and operation system? (what do you need, what are the
steps, what is the time frame, what are the obstacles and how do you get
over them?)
- What do you have to do to
prepare yourselves now, how can VEF help?
- How can you be self
sufficient and independent in VN?
